How To Start A Website – First 3 Steps
For many people starting a website can be daunting. For others, like myself, it’s a simple task and with that in mind, I have decided to create this page to help you get started.
Following are the first 3 steps you need to take.
#1 – Domain Name – You need to decide on your domain name.
Your domain name should either be your own name or a name related to your product or service.
For instance, this particular website’s domain has my own name.
Another website I own is related to the children’s series of books I write – ‘The Skellee Superhero‘ short stories for children. So this domain is – https://www.skellee.com. As parents become familiar with these books and the Skellee brand, they will know to search for ‘Skellee‘ on Google and my domain will be on page one.
My recommendation for registering a domain name is to use the hosting company. (See Step #2.)
All domain owners are required to maintain accurate and valid personal or business contact information in their WHOIS data; however, you can keep this information private by enabling WHOIS Privacy Protection
#2 Web Hosting
After many years of being online and some horrendous nightmares with hosting companies, including being hacked, the hosting company going out of business and domains then being dropped:
My one and only recommendation for hosting is a company called Hostgator. (Click the image below to get started or Contact me if you would like more help.)
#3 A new Gmail account.
Your hosting company will supply you with email addresses for your company’s domain.
However, rather than logging into your hosting company several times a day, you will be forwarding an email to your Gmail account.
An example of a Gmail account you should open would be – info.’yourdomain-name’@gmail.com
Once those three steps are completed, then you can start building your website.
If the above three steps alone seem a lot of work, just let me know if I can help you get started and/or set up your website for you.
